Chapter 24

Caroline

I’VE BEEN SITTING IN my house on my vacation for the past fifteen minutes listening to Sage implicate me in adultery with her husband. Trying to explain my innocence to this woman is analogous to running around in circles while talking to a brick wall: confusing, repetitive, and completely fucking pointless.

I understand her anger toward Taylor, of course I do. It’s expected and, frankly, warranted. However, the words she’s using are unnecessarily harsh – things along the lines of wishing him death or unhappiness until the end of time. At this point, I attempt to intervene, defending Taylor and telling Sage she’s way out of line, but doing so makes her all the more angry.

She laughs maniacally, her face contorting to prove she’s totally unhinged. “Of course you’d stick up for him! I’m not buying your bubbly bullshit or your little miss innocent act. You know, Taylor, I’d noticed you’ve been...off...lately, since before this vacation that, oh, right! Caroline planned! How convenient this all starts right when Parker gets a promotion to leave town?”

If I was pissed before, I’m livid now. An angry red aura clouds my vision from my fury. Parker must notice my change of stance, appearing instantly by my side and pulling me away to talk in private. I glare at Sage as I walk away, unsure if she’s crazy enough to jump me if I turn my back.

Parker touches my arm, forcing my attention to him. “Just relax, baby, I believe you. I don’t know what’s going on with those two, but after everything... I know you wouldn’t cheat on me.” I’m taken back to one of the worst days of my life, the memory overwhelming me.

I’m crying, my shoulders shaking as sobs rake over my body. Parker and I just got engaged, and my tears of joy instantly morphed into ones of despair. “What do you mean, daddy said ‘no?’”

“Well, he didn’t say ‘no’ exactly. Just that... he no longer believed in the constitution of marriage, but we’re free to do as we wish.”

“That shouldn’t surprise me. He left me and my mother behind for some skank half his age. I don’t know why – what is it, Parker?” His face screwed up, indicating there was something else he had to tell me and it also wasn’t pleasant.

“It’s... he said he does want to come to the wedding, but, shit, he wants to bring Meredith.”

“He wants to bring his mistress to my wedding?!”

Snapping out of my daydream, I hug Parker, leaning into him and allowing the weight of this day to be lifted off my shoulders. “Thank you.” I peck him on the cheek before we walk hand-in-hand back to face Sage once more. We’re a united front — a fact which I’m sure is only going to piss her off further.

Returning to the lion’s den, it’s not lost on me that Sage and Taylor have also moved further away to have an unmistakably heated discussion. With the scowl emblazoned on Sage’s face, I can assume she is still yelling at Taylor despite her voice not being raised.
